Crime Scene in Hackney (1)

Another day in Hackney, and the council sends letters to everyone in my street threatening them with a £100 fine if they don’t keep their wheelie bins off the pavement. Of course, no-one thought to send a polite letter first: civility has no place in the council machine.

Meanwhile, over the Hill on the Hackney side of the Haringey border, the roads have been taped off and the place is teeming with police, detectives and bystanders. I ask a policeman: “Was it a bus incident?” He replies: “I can’t say”.

But the bystanders have got word from somewhere. “Someone got stabbed.” “Someone got killed”.

Two more policemen arrive on the scene as I leave (I’ve been buying fruit from Fresh ‘n’ Fruity). One says to the other: “What use are we going to be to anyone here?”

Perhaps they could be investigating last week’s murder?

UPDATE: Yes, it’s yet another teenage murder on the safe streets of Hackney. Expect Diane Abbott up here for a publicity stunt in the near future.

UPDATE 2: The murdered teenager has been named as Devoe Roach. Two other teenagers were murdered on the same day - one elsewhere in London, the other in Birmingham. More details here.

Note: I’ve posted the other camera-phone photos I took on Hackney Lookout.

I want out of Hackney for the safety of my 12 year old son.
I have no idea what is going on in the borough, all Hackney seem to care about is making money off car drivers parking illegally, and like you said giving tenants fines for stupid things, not that I’ve had a fine from the stupid council.
The killings in Hackney is getting out of control.
Shooting on Downs Park Road, Stabbing on Mare Street and now another stabbing in Stamford Hill, all of this within a week.
Hackney has so much CCTV camera’s - why aren’t these killings caught on camera, I’ll tell you why, because there to busy looking for innocent car drivers to bring in the revenue for the broke borough.
I find this all quite disturbing, there will soon be no teenagers walking our streets and as adults we need to claim back the streets.
The children of our future is slowly disappearing through shootings and stabbings.
The police, councils, parents and the government need to step up and do something and quickly because I’m really fed up of hearing that another teenager has been killed on one of our streets.
My question is WHY?
Diane Abbotts is a waste of time, I’ve never know an MP like it. I won’t get started on her as I’ll be here all night.

I would imagine parents of teenagers are frightened. I had no idea stabbings & drive-by shootings had reached such intensity in Hackney. Are they gang-related? I don’t know why I’m asking, I guess because I’m shocked.

I’m not sure if one can reduce the problem to teenagers lacking discipline. Growing up in the South Bronx I knew many teens with wretched parents who never resorted to crime.

When someone can drive by and shoot someone point blank in the face, as that BBC article states, the problem seems a lot larger.

Yes, I think some are gang related; others happen because of posturing and bravado that gets out of hand. But I do think, for whatever reasons, knifings are getting almost casual at the moment: it’s not long ago since I wrote about this one.

I think the teenagers are scared, so they start to carry knives for self-protection, and it gets out of hand. It’s a vicious circle…

I am continually suprised by the killing spree that seems to be happening around us. I know they said this guy was on his way to school (in the news) however it is difficult to imagine that this was not gang related.

What will Harriet need to do her walkabouts in Hackney? A Challenger II tank?

The boy who got stabbed was just a normal kid. He was stabbed by someone for looking at them… is this just another care in the community case?

Interestingly there is not much media coverage of this incident - query whether this is because the victim was black and the killer wasn’t…

bbbbn - I don’t know. No-one has yet been found guilty of the murder.
