This, filmed at lunchtime today in Stamford Hill, is ostensibly a demonstration march to protest about the appalling destruction gun crime wreaks on communities round here. In reality it is members of the Respect coalition using a highly emotive issue as a Trojan horse to garner votes for Lindsey German’s mayoral campaign. The leaflet I was given did not contain one concrete idea for tackling existing gun-crime, though it did a marvellous line in disinformation (”An end to ASBOs - no more kids in prison”) and airy platitudes (”An end to racism”).

Round here, gun crime is a serious issue. We don’t need idiots manipulating it in this disgraceful way.

I passed this demo about 20 minutes before you did (by the look of it), when I drove past them at the big Clapton roundabout.

They looked tiny when I went by, but I also had a distinct moment of “eh?”. The problem with demos is the smaller they are the more corrosive, because “hardened demo-ers” will ALWAYS attend. So the Respect fraction just keep their feelers out and dig out on any issue, still - it’s better than the SWP I suppose.

Personally, my pet hate are CND demos. I’ve attended numerous of the damn things, and nothing gets my spit and bile flowing like baby-boomers trying to change the world. I once blogged on the topic in fact.

Well, it is of course very hard to distinguish the SWP from Respect - often members belong to both. See here and the Respect Wikipedia entry.

Oh, and it was tiny.

Erm not for much longer. It seems that a bunch of conservative religious types and Trotskyists might disagree about one or two things

and lots more evidence besides. I don’t even have the will to dig out all the obsessive chronicling of this stuff.
