Google Maps: Walk on Water
I was thrilled to notice that Google Maps now - at long last - allows pedestrians to plan their journeys. One of the drawbacks as a non-driver was that I always found myself being told to walk along motorways, or follow unnecessary one-way systems.
So I tested it out by asking how best to walk from the Hall of Residence I lived in between 1993 and 1995 (I never forgot the postcode) to my flat. This is what it said.
Still, fair play to the new facility. It does ‘fess up so:
Sound advice.

Well, it does direct you to two ferry routes on the way, rather than expecting you to walk on water, as such. (to Rosyth from Zeebrugge, rather than Brugge, alas)
What is also annoying is that (certainly some) pedestrian-only routes haven’t been added (or for that matter, the WOolwich Ferry, which takes road traffic as well). If you want to walk from North WOolwich (which Google maps strangely describes as being in Essex….it’s never been there, but it did used to be a detached bit of Kent) to Woolwich it directs you walk via….the Rotherhithe Tunnel (a la Diamond Geezer) of all places. Whether your lungs would then be in any state to carry on walking to Woolwich is a different matter
